Late 2004 I'd say, around the time of the first BWEs.

Don't forget, though, that post-release this forum was the beating heart of the Guild Wars community, whether ArenaNet really recognised it or not. It was also trading central, which brought in a lot more people.

The Guild Wars 2 community is spread out across the official forum and numerous fansites, and there is an ingame trading post. The devs have also switched their main channels of communication to Facebook/Twitter, meaning there is less reason to visit an unofficial forum. All of this means that Guru2, while maintaining a healthy population, is nothing close to what Guru1 was in its heyday.

Not to mention there was no real wikis back when gw started, so people came here to ask everything---a LOT of which is now found on the wiki. I still have the books that were on sale for prophecies and factions (still wish they had made one for nightfall so I could have a set)...funny read since most of it has changed since then!!

Geez, cant believe that was that long ago-----time sure flies!

From what I've heard, GW and GW2 are simply two different kind of game: the first is a COOPMMORPG (the only one of its peculiar species), while the latter is a classic MMORPG. Obviously, the people used to the first game, and which likes the co-op style of GW, will hardly find the new game very attractive, all because the huge differences between the two gameplays. I haven't tried GW2 yet, but I'm willing to do as soon as I get a decent computer, and I'll do it knowing that I'm not going to play a GW expansion, but a very different kind of game which takes place in the original GW universe.

Beside this, I really, really hope that GW won't ever die. I'm not a veteran like you all (I've begun my adventure in GW in October 2012), but I really love this game, and have very few complaints about it. I hope to see some new content in it, some minor improvements (mail service, guild storage, a PvP mode which could give some new freshness to the actual PvP, etc.). I hate to see such a great game becoming every day more like a ghost town, with very few people playing, dead Guilds, dead PvP, when it could offer so much to both old and new players.

yeah, us to---but you have to remember its a BUSINESS therefor it has to make money, gw isnt a money maker, gw2 is. So keep those dreams alive, but remember they are more like pipe dreams than anything else. Sad to say.

I know that if something doesn't makes money it's more likely to be left to die slowly, but with a little effort they can make it a little more valuable, both for us player and investors too, and I'll try to explain how now.
  1. Little improvements: GW it's a huge game, involving 4 campaigns arc (I find that EotN is long as a real campaign), 3 expansions, weekly and special events, and PvP. Many players are asking for a new campaign and/or a new expansion, but what could really give some fresh air to the game without investing too much efforts in it are the little details, small upgrades that can make the game more enjoyable by the community:
    • Stackable Kits;
    • Change inherent modifiers in mods and inscriptions for drops in early campaigns;
    • Guild storage;
    • In-game mail service;
    • Stackable insignias and runes;
    • Etc.
    I mean, give some little improvement to make the game more enjoyable, so the people will find it fresher than before. This could be done with no big efforts (imho, maybe I'm wrong).
  2. A Beyond chapter for Nightfall: we know that in the present days of GW2 Elona has become the private kingdom of Palawa Joko, but how did that happened? Personally I want to know more about that, and a Beyond chapter could not just answer to my question, but also put some new quests and items in the game. This would take more efforts for the developers to be done, but there are some ways to make that easier for them (like making a contest for the best story to use for the expansions, let the community "create" it, so the developers have just to make the code and not worry about the story; or also raise founds through a Kickstarter, or other options I can't think of as of now).
  3. More ties with GW2: in GW Elona and Cantha do not appear yet in the story, but they could some day in the future. Then why not put some more ties through the two games? Like, getting some titles, items, quests, or missions in GW would unlock something in GW2. I know that there is already the HoM calculator to get some nice bonus items/skins in GW2, but why not make something similar more "campaign based" like? Some examples: finishing the main storyline in Factions could give access to a skin for swords that resembles Shiro's Swords in a future campaign/expansion in GW2; getting the higest rank in the Sunspear Title Track gives you access to Sunspear Armor Skin in GW2. This could be made for every campaign arc, even for the Beyond's expansions, and will make more people come back to GW to get the new items in GW2.
  4. Some fresh air for PvP: I'm not really into PvP, not because I don't like it, but just because I'm a noob and people in PvP seem to not like noobs. But still, I hear always people complaining that PvP doesn't work well, that it's boring, that it's not even worth a try. The developers could see if they can do something, even little, to make PvP more enjoyable for all players, balancing it, making it worth playing with new rewards, etc.
  5. Listen to the community: the team which works to GW could make a sort of Q&A session through the use of some social media tool (Facebook, Twitter), and listen to what the community wants to say. Are their plans for GW to let it die slowly? Or they want to keep it alive as long as it's profitable? What keeps them from working a bit much on their first-born child? I believe there are a multitude of people in the GW community eager to ask some questions to them.

This is what I think could make GW a bit more lively again. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe not. I don't know if any of the GW Team would ever see this post, I doubt that, but still hope it's the last to die, so I'll hope that my word will be hear someday by someone who could work on them.

GW is in automation mode, there is no "team" that works on it, there is just some very basic support, I'm not even sure anyone is working full-time on it, may just be people working on GW2 taking one day a week or something to update the bonuses/facebook page and the one or the other bug fix.

All those QoL improvements like stackable items would probably require a ton of back-end work and just aren't going to happen.

well I know they wont implement most of what you are asking for Darigaaz.
1 most of that stuff would involve changing more than just a few lines of code. A while back we had asked for a bag/backpack type thing for books, was told they could not do it with the code (too many things within things). Guild storage was nex'd a long time ago--too easy to abuse. And we already have whispers for talking--that is the limit of what they are willing to do.

2 there is no team to work on the elona expansion, heck they left the skill updates for ele, ranger, paragon and monk hanging high and dry.
3 doubt they are even working on those for gw2 as they still have bugs from when it went live to fix! (and they already mentioned there would be no expansions for gw2).
4 again, no team, and not many players left
5 its pretty obvious they dont listen to the community much espeically for a dead game, money is what speaks and gw isnt making any, so shout as loudly as you wish, there is no one listening.

and yes, they dont read here much any more I think the last time any of the areanet team even logged in was last year

so unless something 'breaks' we are stuck with what we currently have (though we do have the new-ish weekly events instead of just on the weekend, !!)

Found this on reddit, not sure if it deserved its own topic so I thought I'd add it here since it is relevant:

Guild Wars 1 "thriving", may last "forever": Mike Zadorojny

While the game could be improved in some ways, at the very least it isn't going away anytime soon!

Well, that means that GW won't die, but also we won't have any kind of new material to play with. I think it's better for us to enjoy it the way it is, and maybe hoping for a miracle that will bring new players on it.

An electronic afterlife is tough to find in gaming. The old makes room for the new in ways that can sometimes be brutally disruptive. Guild Wars 1 developer ArenaNet is working to ensure the community behind the 2005 MMORPG has enough support to live far into the future, according to recent comments by lead content designer Mike Zadorojny (via Eurogamer).

Even after the release of its sequel last year, the first Guild Wars has retained a “thriving” player base, Zadorojny said, and the technology supporting the game should ensure this remains the case. “The game itself was so efficient on the server side in terms of the resources, like, it runs on a fraction of the hardware that we need for running Guild Wars 2, so having that on the back-burner is nothing compared to GW2,” he said.

One key factor in maintaining the online world of the original Guild Wars has been the creation and continued use of automation to organize the game’s tournaments, events, and week-to-week schedule. The small team currently dedicated to maintaining the game won’t be putting together new content, but works instead to take care of any “massive issues,” according to Zadorojny. These are presumably issues that go beyond the scope of the automatic system the developers have created, but the structures ArenaNet has behind the game definitely sound like they were designed with a long lifespan in mind.

“We’ve been doing a lot of automation support so that the game itself could last forever, even without anybody really touching it,” Zadorojny said.
The only thing I would like to see more than anything is skill up dates as some needs buffs of those cosy mentioned.It would also be nice to get more quests with better rewards.

We won't have any new quest, but a skills update could be made some time in the future.

well no need really for a skill update as such as you can 7 hero anything now and has been so for a long time.

Even when they changed the way spamable points to help there were ways to overcome this before.

As a altholic I loved creating builds and some time ago I posted on a guild that was not for release doa hm with heros ect it was used by many to go through this for items
ect. same with the other areas.

the reason it never was made public like others who had similar ways to get through areas was simple they would nerf it. anyone would tell you when a post showed a build it was nerfed.

I had many an argument over this albeit on a game that was to me the greatest.

I still have over 70 toons and log on regular to enjoy some time in a game that I love

I just cannot get myself around GW2. It is like colourfull grind to me. I think like some other hardcore GW1 lovers I will stay here till the end. GW2 is not going to change that. The only thing I am a bit sad about is that most of my friends went to gw2 played there for a few months and left it. It the end they did not return to gw1 and left gw2 for good. It is like gw2 killed off significant amount of gw1 playerbase instead of taking or assimilating it. People were expecting something else, got disappointed and left the both products entirely. Just an opinion....

That could very well be, remember they were stringing this great gw2 for what 5 years? how it would be wonderful!, GREAT! etc....if you were playing the original and were waiting and being told how excellent the sequel was going to be and then.....it finally comes out and like that new toy at christmas....doesnt live up to the hype,
Lots of people arent going to come back because of that. (killing 5 years of hope like that just doesnt make you want to play either game anymore).

BUT....some of those people may find that gw was such a good game (and still around) that they might eventually return here (rose glasses )

I would say most are busy with something else or real life.I will say this GW2 isn't that terrible of a game it is still no where near as great as the original.This is like JJs Star Trek compared to Gens's which is far Superiror in every context even the TNG searies.

You can't beat an original another eg is the old Hawaii 50 compared to the new Hawaii 50.

1. sometimes newer versions become much better
2. its not about how good GW or GW2 are compared to each other, its about GW's future with GW2's existance

i doubt GW2 will last as long as GW, or stay as alive as GW is, even though GW lost lots of people (and gain people cuz of GW2 and/or cuz people just like GW's looks and just try... AND from friends who like GW)

GW is far from death playerbase wise, its just half dead dev wise
as for most of the community: its alive, but you need to search real good to find someone who can help/join with something non-elite(ism)

for one, i hope that Anet will support GW with some smaller updates like several suggestions we made, bug fixes and of course NICE skill updates for pve (pvp is impossible to balance, due to many people finding anything hard to beat) (and splits of course)

it may be slowly, but at least SOME support will do

I don't think you know from this part as GW relies on GW2 survival if it doesn't do well NCSoft will pull the plug on both and possibly no GW3 if.Anet has no say it is all NCSoft Korea.
